Beer and Tobacco

The Australian state Victoria issued its first postal stationary picture card on November 1, 1895. The picture displayed ads for both tobacco and beer (thus alcohol). Conservative circles and organizations launched severe protest. In consequence was the card withdrawn from sale on November 19, 1895. Due to the public stir the card met considerable interest and 85000 copies were sold in the short period of availability at postal counters.
