Chess Olympics

Between October 26, 1960 and November 9, 1960, the 14th Chess Olympics took place in Leipzig as a team tournament. The gold medal was won by the Soviet team ahead of the USA and Yugoslavia. The GDR dedicated a set of stamps issued on September 9, 1960, to the event. In addition, there were corresponding (special) postcards and a special postmark of the Leipzig post office C9.

The decorative imprint on the postcard showed, among other things, the 5 Olympic rings. However, since chess was not (and is not) an Olympic sport, the rings had to be "removed", which was done by an overprint with the Leipzig city coat of arms, framed by 2 chess pieces (knights).
