Solidarity With Greece

Solidarity with Greece

On August 16, 1968, the Soviet Union issued a stamp "Solidarity with Greece" to strengthen the democratic forces in Greece. However, a military coup had taken place there in 1967. In this respect, it was not clear with whom one actually wanted to show solidarity, the military junta or the Greek people. Following the intervention of the Foreign Ministry in Moscow, the stamp (the largest part of the circulation of 4 million) was withdrawn. Alternatively, a protest by Greek authorities is the basis for the withdrawal.
