Local Motifs

On May 3, 1932, the U.S. Postal Service issued a set of stamps for the occupied Philippines on the theme "Local Motifs". The 18 Centavo stamp was dedicated to the Pagsanjan waterfalls on the main Philippine island of Luzon. It was not until October. 25, 1932, that the public realized that it was not the Pagsanjan Falls but the Vernal Falls in California's Yosemite Valley that were depicted.

In the meantime, on September 27, 1932, 30,000 of the stamps, as well as other stamps in the set, had been overprinted in honor of von Gronau's 1932 flight around the world. However, the U.S. Postal Service was aware of the error much earlier, but refrained from publicizing it due to sales already underway. Due to the press about the error as of October 25, 1932, however, the stamp was withdrawn from sale on October 29, 1932. Stamps not shipped to Philippines were sold in the USA until November 17, 1932.

In total, of the original print of 1.003.400, 76.675 of the original stamp and 25.304 of the overprinted stamp were sold, the remainder was destroyed.
