Irish Architecture

As part of the "Irish Architecture" definitives issued from 1982-1990, the £1 value showing Cahir Castle was issued on December, 15, 1982. The stamp could also be affixed to a booklet as proof of payment of TV and telephone charges, thus confirming the corresponding payments.

From 1983 onwards, a significant number of counterfeits of the stamp were produced to simulate payments that had not been made. As a consequence, the £1 stamp was declared invalid on 1 December 1984, the corresponding booklets with stamps could be handed in and the amount paid in, receipted with the (genuine) stamps, was paid out. On June 27, 1985 a new £1 stamp was issued featuring Killarney Cathedral.
