Valeriu Gafencu

On January 24, 2021, Moldova issued a stamp commemorating the 100th birth-day of Valeriu Gafencu (1921-1952). Gafencu was a legionary of the "Iron Guard", a para-military force with fascist and anti-Semitic orientation. In the course of the so-called "Legionary Rebellion" of the Iron Guard, which was also responsible for a pogrom with 125 Jewish deaths during that time, Gafencu was arrested in 1941 and died in prison 11 years later. Gafencu became known for his Christian devotion, to fellow prisoners.

The stamp lacked the country designation MOLDOVA. The stamp was withdrawn from sale on April 21, 2021. A corrected stamp was issued on June 6, 2021.
