World Refugee Year

World refugee year queen elizabeth long nose

On the occasion of the World Refugee Year 1959/60, a corresponding machine advertising postmark was used in Great Britain. In the image of the postmark, an outstretched hand with thumb splayed was used. When the postmark was struck in the appropriate position with Queen Elizabeth stamps, it looked as if the Queen was making a long nose with her hand. Due to this possible, not exactly dignified interpretation, the postmark was withdrawn and replaced by apostmark with a less conspicuous cliché.
