On the occasion of state visits by the Italian President Giovanni Gronchi to South America, three stamps with the respective destinations (Argentina, Uruguay and Peru) were issued on April 3, 1961. The stamps were to be valid for postage as of April 6, 1961. Due to protests from the Peruvian Embassy in Italy, the corresponding stamp for the Peruvian visit was withdrawn as early as April 4, 1961. The reason for the protest was the Peruvian national borders shown on the stamp. The so-called "Amazon triangle" was still disputed between Peru and Ecuador at the time and was not represented as part of Peru on the stamp.

However, parts of the stamps had already been affixed to "collector's" aerogrammes, which were to be transported to the respective countries by the President's plane. The stamp rates corresponded exactly to the postage required for an aerogramme to the corresponding countries. The "Gronchi rosa" dedicated to the state visit to Peru was pasted over on the corresponding aerogrammes by a corrected stamp that was available on April 5, 1961. By the time the "Gronchi rosa" was withdrawn, approximately 80000 copies had been sold.
